Bathroom Remodel Planning: Decisions to Make Before Demolition

A bathroom remodel moves more smoothly when the decisions that affect concealed work are made before the old room comes apart. Tile color can be important, but drain placement, fixture compatibility, storage, and entry layout influence the sequence much earlier. Use this planning guide to organize a useful first meeting.

Define the daily-use problem

Write down what makes the current bathroom difficult: cramped entry, inadequate storage, a tub nobody uses, or a vanity that interrupts movement. Rank those problems. This keeps the project focused when a beautiful reference photo suggests changes that do not improve the room’s actual function.

Choose a layout with real dimensions

Measure door swings, cabinet depth, and the space needed to use fixtures. Product descriptions alone do not establish fit. A freestanding tub, for example, also needs usable access for cleaning and a coordinated filler location. Where the layout changes, licensed trade input and any necessary design review should precede final commitments.

Resolve the connected products

Bring the shower trim, valve requirements, drain, tile format, vanity, sink, and lighting selections together. Record model numbers and lead times. A substitute chosen after rough work may change more than appearance. Identify which selections must be final before demolition and which can reasonably remain open.

Discuss the work you will not see

Ask how preparation, waterproofing, ventilation, and concealed conditions are handled in the proposed scope. Photographing those stages can create a useful project record. Installation details depend on the selected assembly and the room; a reference picture is not a waterproofing specification.

Plan the temporary routine

Identify which bathroom remains available, where materials can be stored, and how the crew reaches the work area. For two-bathroom projects, compare the convenience of phased work with the possible extra mobilization. Before the first demolition day, everyone should understand the access plan, purchasing responsibilities, and decisions still outstanding.
